A professor with hearing loss who adopted a deaf dog becomes the ideal pet parent
Champ the dog’s family was unable to adequately care for him once he went deaf, so they had to surrender him to a shelter.
Fortunately, the dog quickly found his ideal owner—a sign language instructor who had lost his hearing—and left the shelter, moving into a new home.
Florida resident Davelis Goutoufas was not intending to bring a puppy home that day. He merely intended to observe the animals and, potentially, select a dog to keep as a pet.
The idea, however, was a touch too successful.
«Champion welcomed me inside his enclosure with open arms. I petted him, and as I was leaving, he approached me and softly barked as if to say, «Please pick me.» stated Davelis.
Davelis noticed Champ right away because of his distinctive color and upbeat demeanor. Yet, as soon as he learned that the dog was deaf, he understood that this was fate.
Within a few hours of telling the employees at the shelter that he was taking Champ home, the guy formally adopted the polite child.
Although taking care of a deaf dog is challenging, Davelis is fully capable of managing it.
He has adopted a new dog, Apollo, and is already teaching him sign language. Apollo is catching up quickly.
According to Davelis, Apollo is already familiar with a few sign language words and picks them up quickly.
