Emma Thompson gave Kate Winslet advice that she has «never forgotten» throughout the years

Ever since they starred together in the 1995 period drama, the two women have stayed friends.

Over the years, Emma Thompson’s wise comments to co-star Kate Winslet in Sense & Sensibility have stuck with her.

When Winslet, now 48, debuted in the entertainment industry, she was comparatively unknown. Thompson, now 65, was an established performer who costarred and penned the screenplay for the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic. The two bonded via playing at being sisters.

Winslet remarked, «She has a groundedness and a clarity of perception about the industry as a whole,» in response to moderator Josh Horowitz on September 23 at the 92NY Center for Culture & Arts in New York City. «She was protective of me in a way.»

When Winslet shot to stardom a few years later with the 1998 blockbuster Titanic, Winslet claimed that Thompson was worried.
«I believe that she was genuinely a little concerned about— well, not about whether Kate would lose her mind, as that was obviously not my nature— but rather about the fact that it could be extremely overwhelming and what would I do in that situation.»

«She did tell me…» Just keep in mind that not working is just as vital as working. And that is something I will never forget,» Winslet went on.

«I was aware that I didn’t want this to expire. I wanted to work here all the time. Regarding possible overexposure, Winslet remarked, «And I thought, God, if I do this, then maybe people would get sick of me and argue, ‘Well, not her anymore, and let’s move on to somebody else.»

«I do recall acting on Emma’s advice and taking it very seriously.» And, in fact, still taking action on it,» she went on.

Horowitz surprised Winslet with a filmed video from Thompson and her husband Greg Wise, who costarred with them in Sense & Sensibility. Winslet was at the 92NY to screen her new film Lee, about pioneering World War II photographer Lee Miller.

Thompson said in the message, «Your old friend Tommo here.» «I wanted to bring to memory the instance in which you suggested that I talk to that guy, and I declined. He’s not going to be interested, that much is clear. And you responded, «I believe you are mistaken.»

Then, 58-year-old Wise made an appearance in the picture and joked, «Yeah, thirty years ago, more than half of my life.» Almost half.

Thompson concluded the video by saying, «We love you,» and disclosed that Wise is collaborating on a future project with Winslet’s 23-year-old daughter, Mia Threapleton.

In a 2020 essay, Winslet gave Thompson a lot of praise. Recalling their experience on Sense & Sensibility, she remarked, «The thing about Emma is that she’s a wonderful actress, but as a person, she is just extraordinary, and she’s absolutely herself, you know, there’s none of this film star glitzy stuff.»

She is an integral member of the team, and her very presence somehow made everyone feel at ease and at ease. Em and I did grow close to being sisters, and we still are now.
