Insinuating that his life became «a soap opera, televised in fact,» Johnny Depp makes hints about the Amber Heard trial

At a show, the celebrity seemed to allude to his contentious trial with ex-wife Amber Heard.

During a press appearance for his latest endeavor, Johnny Depp made reference to his widely reported legal struggle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

The 61-year-old celebrity is making his feature film debut at the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain with his new film, Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. At a press conference on September 24, Johnny Depp discussed his personal connection to Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, the subject of the movie.

«Everyone has a narrative. Yes, it’s true that I have experienced a variety of things from time to time. But, you know, I’m okay,» he laughed in a conference video that The Hollywood Reporter posted to Instagram.

«In the end, I believe that we have all experienced a variety of things. Perhaps yours wasn’t, didn’t become a soap opera, televised, in fact,» Depp said, seemingly alluding to his defamation trial in Virginia in 2022, which was shown live to millions of people every day.

«But we all experience and go through what we go through,» he went on. And these are your stripes—those things that allow us to survive, remember, and make use of. You will always remember them.

Hence, it is heartbreaking to witness these folks who are all on the edge of earning their stripes and who are, in a sense, unable to talk.»

Heard, 38, settled the defamation lawsuit with Depp for $1 million after a jury found primarily in favor of Depp. She currently resides in a quiet neighborhood in Madrid, Spain, with her 3-year-old kid.

Camille Vasquez, one of Depp’s attorneys in the case, told PEOPLE earlier this year that Depp was the one who insisted on having cameras present in the courtroom during the trial.

She stated, «I understand how intimate and how intrusive some of the subjects we discussed were for both of them, for Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard,» and that it was «extremely crucial» that Depp be able to connect with his supporters «and present them with the evidence that the jury was considering.»

Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, Heard’s former trial lawyer, told PEOPLE at the same time that she «fought hard» to prevent cameras from being there and believes that «social media completely hijacked that trial.»

The San Sebastian International Film Festival released a synopsis of Depp’s Modi film, which «follows a chaotic series of events through the streets of war torn Paris in 1916.»

«On the run from the police, [Amedeo Modigliani’s] desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow artists Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine and Modi’s muse, Beatrice Hastings,» according to the synopsis.

«Modi seeks advice from his art dealer and friend, Leopold Zborowski — however, after a night of hallucinations, the chaos in Modi’s mind reaches a crescendo when faced with an American collector, Maurice Gangnat, who has the power to change his life.»

As he continues to screen Modi, Depp is due to get a lifetime achievement award at the Rome Film Festival in October. That month, he’s also launching an art show in New York City.
