Kevin Costner wins the Colonna D’Oro prize and looks handsome at the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Catanzaro, Italy
Along with the announcement that the second installment of Horizon: An American Saga will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Kevin Costner received honors on Wednesday at the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Catanzaro, Italy.
Attending the fifth night of the 21st Magna Graecia Film Festival at Arena Porto, the 69-year-old actor looked dashing in a light blue coat with a matching shirt and white pants.
At the festival, Costner accepted the Colonna D’Oro, screened the first segment of Horizon: An America Saga, and participated in a discussion about the movie.
The second installment of An American Saga, which was originally scheduled for a mid-August theatrical release but was withdrawn from the schedule due to Chapter One’s poor box office performance, will make its world premiere in September at the Venice Film Festival.
On September 7, the final day of the festival, there will be an out-of-competition performance of the Western epic in addition to a showing of part one. In a statement, Costner stated that showing the movie in Venice was always his «dream.»
Earlier this year, at the Cannes Film Festival, the first chapter had a glamorous debut that included a protracted standing ovation that brought Costner to tears of happiness.
«A visionary project of a great actor and director, who invested himself in the epic reconstruction of the years crucial to the founding of the country, digging beyond myth in search of authenticity capable of restoring a piece of history in its complex and contradictory reality,» was how Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera put it.
It was unorthodox for both movies to be released back-to-back in June and August. Then, in its first two weeks of release in theaters, the first chapter barely made $23 million.
New Line Cinema stated that they intended to offer more people more time to experience Chapter One when they announced the adjustment in schedule.
Costner has been working on the ambitious films for over 30 years as a passion project. He invested part of his own money in their production and is currently in the midst of filming the third of what he hopes will be four films in total.
«I owe Alberto Barbera a debt of gratitude for his bravery and vision in embarking on this cinematic adventure,» Costner remarked. «May the movies live long and may those who support them stand firm.»
On August 28, the 81st Venice Film Festival will begin. The highly awaited global premieres of Joker: Folie à Deux and Beetlejuice are among them. The Room Next Door, Maria, Queer, Wolfs, Beetlejuice.
The multi-part An American Saga film, starring and directed by Costner, takes place during the 15 years leading up to and following the 1861–1865 Civil War, during which time white immigrants stole Native Americans’ ancestral lands and traveled westward.
While Horizon Chapter 2 was scheduled for theatrical release on August 16, it was released in the US on June 28. However, critics panned the first installment and it did not do well at the box office following Costner’s high-profile departure from Yellowstone.
The decision to release Chapter 1 on Premium VOD on July 16 in conjunction with theatrical screenings was made earlier this month by Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema; Chapter 2’s release has been postponed indefinitely.
In order to allow viewers more time to discover the first episode of Horizon over the next few weeks, including on PVOD and MAX, Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have opted not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16, a representative for the studio informed THR.
«We express our gratitude to our exhibition partners for their unwavering support as the film makes its theatrical debut across the United States.»
«The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2 has been incredibly gratifying,» Territory Pictures continued in a separate statement. Kevin developed this movie for moviegoers who wished to embark on an adventure in mind.
We are grateful for their support and for believing in our films, which we have expressed through the support we have received from moviegoers and theater owners as they see the first installment of our narrative.
«We are excited about the chance to extend that window, as we are certain that it will only improve the viewing experience of Horizon 2.»
In June 2022, Costner had previously disclosed that he intended to shoot four consecutive Horizon films.
In his illustrious career, Costner has directed four films: Dances With Wolves (1990), The Postman (1990), and Open Range (2003). This is his fourth time behind the camera.
A remarkable seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, were won by Costner’s 1990 directorial debut, Dances with Wolves, one of his many artistic triumphs.
