Woolen jumpers for penguins are knit by 98-year-old Australian resident Merle Davenport.

These garments prevent the infant penguins of Phillip Island from freezing and being oiled.

Davenport is a Victoria resident.

For the past 18 years, she has been crocheting vibrant sweaters for penguins. For the Penguin Foundation, the Australian knit over a thousand pieces in total.

Davenport went to the island in 2014 to witness the young penguins.

A penguin can die from even a very small amount of oil because the oil separates the feathers and creates a «access» for water.

The result is that the birds freeze, gain weight, and lose their ability to find food.

Sweater penguins remain on land until they are deemed «water-resistant».

The sweaters are imported from all across the globe.

If the clothing is inappropriate for real penguins, it is put on toy penguins and sold.

Davenport sweaters are being kept on hand in case there are any more oil leaks in the area of the island since 2001.
