Tom Cruise Surprises the Audience with «Always Wanted to Experience a Film Like This»

At London’s Royal Albert Hall, the film’s soundtrack was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and composer Lorne Balfe.

Tom Cruise just had an unprecedented experience with one of his blockbuster movies, surrounded by an audience who had no idea he would be there in person.

The 62-year-old actor shocked the crowd on Friday, September 27, at London’s Royal Albert Hall at the Top Gun: Maverick event. The event featured a screening of his 2022 film accompanied by a live performance of the film’s soundtrack by composer Lorne Balfe and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.

The Top Gun star was seen introducing the movie and praising its live score presentation while standing in front of a sizable orchestra in fan-recorded footage from the event that was posted to X (previously Twitter).

Onstage, Cruise called Balfe, who co-wrote the Maverick score with Hans Zimmer, Lady Gaga, and Harold Faltermeyer, a «dear friend» and «brilliant.»

«I also want to thank tonight’s orchestra and all of your exceptional talents,» Cruise stated. «I’ve always wanted to experience a film like this with a live, full symphony orchestra, synchronized to picture, in front of a packed audience in the grandeur of a classic movie palace.»

He said, «Thank you all for being here and thank you for making this dream come true,» before wishing the audience «enjoy» the moment and announcing that he would be watching it with them.

The Top Gun orchestral performance was a part of the Royal Albert Hall’s Films in Concert series, which also includes upcoming showings of Avatar, Gladiator, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and Home Alone, according to the venue’s website. Ghostbusters, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra under the direction of Peter Bernstein, the son of original composer Elmer Bernstein, will be the venue’s next Live in Concert performance on October 26.

After closing out the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in August by hanging from atop Stade de France and landing on the stadium’s field, Cruise made another unexpected appearance. Four years ahead of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, he was welcomed to the ground by gymnast Simone Biles and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who also gave him an Olympic flag.

In fact, Cruise appeared at the Olympics for free, according to Casey Wasserman, president and chairman of LA28, who disclosed this information during a panel on September 10.

«A person in the stadium as a stunt double was the original idea,» Wasserman said, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

«I’m in,» says Cruise around five minutes into the presentation. However, I won’t do anything unless I get to do everything.»

During the CNBC and Boardroom event, Wasserman said that the actor «got more involved and more engaged» at each «step of the way.»
