Wiz Khalifa faces charges in Romania for possessing illegal drugs
The rapper was the main attraction at a festival in Costinesti when prosecutors from the area said he consumed marijuana on stage.
Wiz Khalifa was taken into custody in Romania and accused of possessing illegal drugs.
The 36-year-old rapper and actor (real name Cameron Thomaz) was the main attraction at the «Beach, Please!» festival in Costinesti, Romania, according to reports from the French news agency Agence France Presse (AFP).
Prosecutors said that early on Sunday, July 14, authorities discovered cannabis in Thomaz’s possession.
The outlet claims that marijuana is classified as a «risk drug» in Romania and that Khalifa may spend up to 10 years in jail if found guilty.
The «See You Again» rapper smoked the substance onstage during his performance, according to a statement given to the French publication on Sunday by the Romanian anti-organized crime prosecutors’ organization DIICOT.
«During a performance at a music festival held in the resort of Costinesti, the accused was found to have possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and to have consumed (onstage) another quantity in the form of a handmade cigarette,» DIICOT stated in a statement.
According to a source who talked with the site, Khalifa and a number of other individuals were arrested early on Sunday by local officials for questioning. After being charged, he was immediately freed.
Shortly after his release, the Dickinson actor posted about his imprisonment on X (previously Twitter).
«The concert last night was fantastic. «My intention in lighting up the stage was not to cause offense to Romania,» he wrote. «They allowed me to leave with much respect. I’ll be back shortly. But the next time, not with a big ass joint.»
According to AFP, the inquiry is still ongoing.
The rapper’s image heavily revolves around cannabis, and he frequently discusses smoking in his songs. In an earlier this year joke, he told host Alex Cooper on her Call Her Daddy podcast that he had even attended his son’s parent-teacher conferences and that the teachers «expect it.»
«Absolutely. I’m coming stone cold. They anticipate it,» Khalifa answered. «It is known to them. It’s not like the old days, when smoking marijuana made you a poor parent. My son definitely smells like marijuana. He definitely smells like pot, but I’m not sure because I can’t smell it.»
For the musician, summer has been a busy season. He and his partner Aimee Aguilar only disclosed last month that they are expecting a girl, their first child together.
«Baby Girl On The Way,» Khalifa captioned an Instagram picture of the couple holding a positive pregnancy test on Father’s Day.
Alongside his kid Sebastian Taylor, age 11, Khalifa also has a son with his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose.
