‘You’ve made our dreams come true’. Aerosmith RETIRE from touring after 54 years
After 54 years on the road, Aerosmith announced their retirement, citing frontman Steven Tyler’s irreversible vocal problems as the reason behind the difficult decision.
The band revealed the news in an all-caps statement on Friday. The 76-year-old singer suffered vocal chord injury during their final tour last year.
The text stated: «AEROSMITH WAS BECAME IN 1970 BY A SPARK OF INSPIRATION.» THANK YOU, BLUE ARMY, FOR STARTING THE SPARK THAT HAS BEEN BURNING FOR MORE THAN FIVE DECADES AND CAUGHT FLAME. YOU ALL ARE THE REASON WE MADE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HISTORY, AND SOME OF YOU HAVE BEEN WITH US SINCE THE BEGINNING.
The band was founded in Boston in 1970, and during the course of their more than 50 years of touring, they achieved scores of successes, four Grammy Awards, and admission into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
Known as «the Bad Boys from Boston,» the group also broke down barriers by fusing hip-hop and rock in their incredible Walk This Way collaboration with Run-DMC.
Brad Whitford plays guitar, Joey Kramer plays drums, Tom Hamilton plays bass, and Joe Perry plays guitar in the group with Steven.
«IT HAS BEEN THE HONOR OF OUR LIVES TO HAVE OUR MUSIC BECOME PART OF YOURS,» the message went on.
YOU HAVE GIVEN US A PART IN THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR LIVES, IN EVERY CLUB, ON EVERY HUGE TOUR, AND AT MOMENTS GRAND AND PRIVATE.
Due to the frontman’s vocal cord injury last year, the legendary rock group was forced to postpone the dates of their final tour, Peace Out: The final Tour.
Since the tour postponement, the Walk This Way hitmakers have not made an appearance.
‘WE’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BLOW YOUR MIND WHEN PERFORMING,’ the statement to their supporters added. As you are aware, Steven’s voice is a unique instrument. He has been working nonstop for months to restore his voice to its pre-injury state.
Despite having the best medical team on his side, we have seen him struggle.
Sadly, it is evident that he will never fully recover from his vocal injury. AS A BAND OF BROTHERS, WE HAVE MADE THE HEARTBREAKING AND DIFFICULT, BUT NECESSARY, DECISION TO RETIRE FROM THE TOURING STAGE.
They thanked them and everyone else who helped make them one of the most iconic acts in Rock ‘n Roll history as they wrapped up their heartfelt statement to their millions of followers.
«WE ARE GRATEFUL BEYOND WORDS FOR EVERYONE WHO WAS PUMPED TO GET ON THE ROAD WITH US ONE LAST TIME,» the statement said in its conclusion. THANKFUL TO THOUSANDS OF TALENTED PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE OUR HISTORIC RUNS POSSIBLE, AS WELL AS OUR EXPERT CREW AND AMAZING TEAM.
«A ULTIMATE GRATEFULNESS TO YOU — THE BEST FANS ON EARTH.» LISTEN TO OUR MUSIC LOUDLY NOW AND FOREVER. END UR DREAM. YOU HAVE TRANSFORMED OUR DREAM HOMES.
Steven announced the postponement of the tour in September 2023 and gave an explanation of what went wrong.
«I’m heartbroken to say I have received strict doctor’s orders not to sing for the next thirty days,» Tyler stated in his letter at the time.
Tyler continued, alluding to the performance at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York on Saturday, saying, «I suffered vocal cord damage during the show that led to subsequent bleeding.»
He ended his speech by saying, «We’ll need to postpone a few dates so that we can come back and give you the performance you deserve.»
The farewell tour was first scheduled to start in September 2023 and include 40 events in North America through January 2024. The band had first announced it in May 2023.
With more than 150 million records sold worldwide—more than 85 million of which were sold in the US—Aerosmith stands as the best-selling American hard rock band of all time.
With 25 gold, 18 platinum, and 12 multi-platinum albums, they are tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American group and hold the record for the most total certifications of any group in history.
Aerosmith has won four Grammy Awards over the years, including two for songs that were nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1994 and 1995, for Livin’ On The Edge and Crazy, respectively.
The band formed in the early 1970s when Tyler, Kramer, guitarist Ray Tabano, and Perry and Hamilton met while playing in a group named Jam Band.
Together, they created a sound primarily influenced by pop rock, heavy metal, glam metal, and rhythm & blues, with a strong blues foundation in hard rock.
The band’s self-titled debut album was published in 1973, and it was followed by Get Your Wings in 1974. Toys in the Attic (1975) and Rocks (1976) marked the band’s mainstream breakthrough.
Throughout the decade, the band did a lot of touring and scored twelve Hot 100 songs, including Walk This Way, Dream On, and Sweet Emotion.
Their popularity was somewhat delayed, though, when Perry and Whitford left the band in 1979 and 1981 as a result of internal strife and drug abuse.
Before Perry and Whitford rejoined the group in 1984, the group did not experience significant commercial success in the early 1980s.
When they worked with the rap group Run-DMC on the Walk This Way version, they went back to their previous peak of popularity.
With their multi-platinum albums Pump (1989), Get a Grip (1993), and Nine Lives (1997), they went on to win multiple awards.
I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, which was featured on the Armageddon soundtrack, became their first number-one hit in 1998.
They even had their own theme park attraction the next year, in 1999, when Disney World in Florida opened the Rock ‘n Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith ride, and later in Paris.
Along with Britney Spears, boyband NSYNC, and rapper Nelly, Aerosmith played during the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show. Later that year, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
