Frontman Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction speaks out about his dramatic altercation with bandmate Dave Navarro, which resulted in the band having to postpone their tour
Following his altercation with guitarist Dave Navarro on stage, which resulted in Jane’s Addiction postponing the remainder of their tour, Perry Farrell has spoken out.
Navarro declared on Monday that the group will not be playing any more shows, citing Farrell’s «mental health difficulties» as the reason for their falling out during last Friday’s Boston show.
Now, 65-year-old Farrell is expressing regret to the group’s supporters and fellow musicians for his «inexcusable behavior.»»It is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family, and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,» Farrell stated, according to Variety. «This weekend has been incredibly difficult.»
In closing, he said, «Unfortunately, I reached my breaking point and behaved in an inexcusable manner. I accept full responsibility for my actions.»
Before, Farrell’s wife, Etty Lau, attempted to justify his actions by saying that he was ‘drowned out’ by his comrades’ loud music.
Eyewitnesses say Farrell began ‘shouting’ at Navarro during ‘Mountain Song’, which intensified until their bust out during ‘Ocean Size.’
It was said by attendees that Farrell ‘had a huge bottle of wine with him all evening, Navarro and Avery continued conversing with each other the whole show and seemed angrier than typical.’
The band reunited for the first time in 14 years earlier this year, and the Boston performance occurred one week after they performed two sets in New York City as part of a reunion tour.
Fans said there seemed to be bad blood between the bandmates when Farrell told them he wasn’t in great shape for the concerts on the first night of the New York City shows at Pier 17.
«Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you,» Farrell said to the assembly. There’s a problem with my voice. I simply can’t seem to get the notes out these days.
After the performance, bassist Eric Avery spoke with fans on Instagram, expressing his excitement for «getting another crack at this spectacular rooftop venue tonight.» I think things will get better.
The week before Friday’s outburst, a critic from CL Tampa claimed that Farrell had been «chugging from a full bottle of wine» and had «struggled» and «spiraled» as the band started playing «Mountain Song.»
According to the article, Navarro ‘launched into various ridiculous rants’ about politics, mushrooms, and cow pastures until stopping when he ‘deliberately blasted out a loud, piercing chord on his guitar, as virtually to silence Farrell and get the show back on track.’
Critic Gave Echazabal wrote a review in which he said Farrell drank from a bottle of wine while having trouble keeping up with his heavy-metal bandmates.
It was difficult to reconcile Farrell’s mediocre performance with the clear, distinct power the band was producing behind him, as Echazabal put it. «His delivery was either late or disjointed.»
«One almost got the feeling that this wasn’t the first bottle he’d uncorked for the night,» he continued, after witnessing Farrell grow obsessed with the wine bottle.
Navarro,57, informed supporters on Monday that the tour would not be continuing.
«We have decided that we have no choice but to terminate the current US tour due to a persistent pattern of behavior and our singer Perry Farrell’s mental health issues,» Navarro stated in a statement.
He went on: «We have no other choice because we are concerned for both his and our own safety and well-being.» We’re hoping he’ll get the support he requires.
«We sincerely apologize for not being able to fulfill the orders of all of our fans who have already purchased tickets. There doesn’t seem to be a way to guarantee a secure atmosphere on stage or consistently enable us to put on a fantastic show every night.
Navarro added, «Our hearts are broken,» as a tragic closing to the speech. Eric, Dave, and Stephen. This was the first tour with the original lineup of the band in fourteen years.
Forming in 1985, the Los Angeles band underwent a ‘farewell’ tour in 1991. Eric Avery, a band member, left the group amicably in 2010.
