It’s not Game of Thrones or How I Met Your Mother—the worst TV show ending ever revealed
The results of a recent investigation that identified the worst TV show finales ever are shocking.
Bo McCready created a list that contrasts IMDB’s average episode ratings with finale ratings. Surprisingly, both Game of Thrones and How I Met Your Mother are in the top 10, while not being in the top 10.
However, House of Cards wins the prize for the largest decline in viewership following its contentious climax.
Following Kevin Spacey’s unexpected departure from the show due to claims of past sexual assault, the series had a clumsy final season.
The TV’s most disappointing conclusions are as follows:
1. House of Cards
The disgraced star of the political drama, Kevin Spacey, was absent from the last season, which left many dissatisfied. On IMDB, the November 2, 2018, season finale was rated 2.6 out of 10, a startling 55% decrease from the 8.1 average episode rating.
At the conclusion, political fixer Doug Stamper confessed to Claire Hale (now president) that, upon realizing he was going to kill her, he had her husband, Frank Underwood (formerly played by Spacey), poisoned. Claire then kills Doug with a knife.
One angry Reddit user posted a diatribe saying, «What an absolutely terrible ending.» David Attenborough narrates paint dry, and I would like to watch that.
In a critical review published on Vox, the Netflix drama House of Cards was accused of saving its worst for last and that its «dismal ending proves it never had anything to say.»
2. The Promised Neverland
The Promised Neverland, the anime adaption, had a promising beginning but a disappointing conclusion.
Supporters claimed that the well-liked manga adaptation had a «unsatisfactory ending,» «rushed pacing,» and «significant deviations from the source material.»
The main heroine Emma makes a fresh pledge to the demons in the show’s universe at the finale, which aired on March 26, 2021, giving up her family’s memories in order to prevent future demon-eating of children.
On IMDB, the average episode had an 8/10 rating, but the conclusion had a startling 52 percent rating decline to a 2.8.
According to Comic Book Resources, fans were let down by the contentious resolution of The Promised Neverland. «The Promised Neverland is still praised as a classic and successful franchise,» they claimed, despite the contentious climax in which Emma makes a new Promise in exchange for her loved ones’ safety.
3. Game of Thrones
With its ‘awful’ ending, which aired on May 19, 2019, the last season of Game of Thrones brought the cultural phenomenon to a crashing halt.
The Game of Thrones finale unavoidably caused fan division after airing because it was never going to please everyone after nine years, eight seasons, and hundreds of horrifying deaths.
The show’s average episode rating was a high 8.8, however the conclusion had a rate of 4.
The anticipated demise of Daenerys Targaryen, the unexpected crowning of the injured Bran Stark as King of Westeros, and the somewhat symbolic toppling of the Iron Throne marked the conclusion of the sixth and last episode of the much anticipated farewell season.
The harsh critique published in The Atlantic bluntly declared: «This drama turned into a sitcom.» Not a glossy HBO sitcom either, more like a cheapo network production, or perhaps a webisode of the show’s outtakes.
«The Iron Throne» was emotionally shallow, logically strained, and toned strangely; it seemed like the first draft of a conclusion.
4. Killing Eve
The unsatisfactory conclusion of the spy thriller Killing Eve, which aired on April 10, 2022, upset viewers.
Ultimately, The Twelve—the string-pullers who taught Villanelle how to become an assassin—are brought to justice by Eve and Villanelle. Their joy—as well as the renewed on-screen romance—is short-lived, though, as Villanelle is shot and killed by a sniper.
«This is a worse ending than the end of Game of Thrones!» exclaimed a furious Reddit member.
«The entire season was ridiculous and badly written,» another person said.
However, some people liked how it ended. «To fans, the brutal end of the Eve-Villanelle story was an unforgivable betrayal,» The Guardian said in defense of the ending. It was one of the most audacious things I’ve seen in a long time, and I thought it was perfectly blunt TV.
The mean episode received a rating of 7.9 out of 10. The end? A pitiful 3.4.
5. Dexter
The September 22, 2013, Dexter finale left viewers furious and ‘bloodthirsty’ for a better conclusion. Dexter murders his own sister, Debra, toward the end of the series.
‘It’s the most depressing terrible rubbish I’ve seen in my life,’ a Reddit member said without holding back. It depresses and disappoints me greatly.
Others described it as excruciatingly emotional, with one Reddit user elaborating: «We want Dexter to be happy and right as he finds a way to finally move past everything and leave the killing behind, but he loses everything instead, by chasing his happiness he ends up getting Deb killed.» Deb’s death was such a powerful scene.
The show’s finale received a mere 4.7 out of 10, despite it once receiving an 8.5 out of 10 on the critics’ scale.
6. Two and a Half Men
The sitcom’s spectacular climax, which featured a piano falling on Charlie’s head—the character who had been killed off following Charlie Sheen’s turbulent departure in 2011—was too much for even casual viewers to handle. As a new fan, the ending is awful, as one Reddit user put it. ‘It’s a disrespect to fans,’ said another commenter.
The February 19, 2015, finale received a 3.8 out of 10 from viewers, showing that it was a complete failure. a thirty-five percent decline for the show, which has a long run average of 7.3 episode ratings.
7. Ragnarok
Viewers of this Norse mythology-inspired serial felt duped, particularly by the show’s May 27, 2021, end.
The entire show walks a tightrope, leaving viewers to speculate as to whether or not Magne, the main character, is actually Thor in human form. In the end, when he exits his fantasy realm, it appears as though he has imagined everything.
«The final episode feels like a broken promise, a missed opportunity to deliver a tale of gods and giants for the ages,» a Reddit user commented. With a disturbing finale, the show that had an average rating of 7.3 out of 10 on IMDB plummeted to a 3.8 episode rating.
8. Power
The climax of this criminal thriller, which aired on February 9, 2020, left fans furious.
Who shot Ghost? was revealed in the flashback-ending climax, which also addressed the biggest mystery of the series. Some viewers, however, took issue with the show’s hurried response to the query. The Power series finale was a disaster, exclaimed one Reddit member. The authors damaged the program, and they blew it.
On IMDB, the finale had a 5.3 rating, which is significantly lower than the 8.4 rating of the typical episode.
9. Bloodline
Fans were disappointed by the way this thriller ended. At the end of the film, John confronts his nephew Nolan, whose father, Danny, was murdered by John (who is also Danny’s brother). The show cuts to black as Nolan wants to know who killed Danny.
The May 26, 2017, finale drew criticism from one viewer who said, «There is no ending.» They completely mishandled a brilliant, captivating plot. «Completely rushed with way too many unanswered questions,» said an additional person. The finale received a 5.1 rating from viewers, which is lower than the average episode rating of 7.9.
10. MythBusters
The March 5, 2016, episode of the adored science show concluded, leaving viewers with conflicting emotions. Four tests, one involving an exploding cement truck, concluded the event. Some fans thought it was a whimper even though it went out with a bang, while others were more forgiving.
As one admirer put it, «we in the entertainment industry sometimes leave them wanting more.» Everyone should scream that the show should continue since it was still fantastic. The episode average was substantially higher at 7.2, but the ending still only received a 4.4 out of 10.
