The Reason Kerry Washington Doesn’t Highlight Her Kids: «Let Them Be Children»

Kerry Washington is a fiercely devoted mother bear. The 47-year-old Scandal veteran recently shared her thoughts on why she shields her children from the spotlight in Hollywood.

Her children, daughter Isabelle, 10, son Caleb, 7, and stepdaughter Anaiya, 18, are under the care of her and her spouse, Nnamdi Asomugha. (The adolescent is Asomugha’s former relationship child.)

In an interview that was published on Sunday, June 30, Washington said to People, «I think that from the very beginning, Nnamdi and I have been really protective of our partnership and our relationship, because we wanted it to belong to us and we found that we were able to define and create a relationship for ourselves and with each other outside of the public eye.»

She said, «And I think that in many ways, all we really want is to offer our children the same chance to define their own lives and to enter the public sphere in the way that they see fit.

Despite their claims to be «definitely not as protective as we used to be,» Washington and Asomugha, 42, nonetheless let their kids follow their passions.

Then the star of Little Fires Everywhere made a joke about the youngsters not being «locked in a dungeon.»

She mentioned that occasionally the three do visit her workstations.

Since this is what we do, we do feel that we should grant people the agency to live a public life as they see fit.

We have made the decision to pursue careers as athletes and artists. However, Washington stated, «We want to let them be kids.»

2013 saw the marriage of the NFL player and the Confirmation actress in Idaho. Asomugha was a football player with the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles.

After ten years in the NFL, he retired in 2013. Washington said earlier this year that she concealed her engagement ring inside her clothing in order to maintain the privacy of her relationship.

«It felt like there was a lot of public energy around our careers, but we kept our relationship very private when we were dating, I think mostly because we wanted to protect ourselves and each other,» Washington revealed on SiriusXM’s This Life of Mine with James Corden.

«I used to pin my engagement ring to my undergarments because I loved my ring so much, so I would sleep in it at night, and then in the morning, I would pin it to my undergarments so that nobody knew we were engaged,» she said.
